Ashtanga yoga and the moon

Our body is made up of about 65% water, that’s why the moon phases affect us directly. The gravitational forces, relative to the Moon and Sun, determine them.

The Full Moon influences the tides, nature and animals, and also brings strong energies. The body feels more lubricated on the muscles and ligaments, thus, more flexible. Our mind state gets very active, dispersed and with lack of concentration, so is the best moment to stay quiet, and observe the movements of the Universe.

With the New Moon, the tides are low and a decrease of body fluids occurs. Consequently, the joints are dry and limited, and the body probably feels more exhausted. The energy decreases, so it is time for rest and meditation.

In our tradition, the days of Full Moon and New Moon there is no asana practice.
